the 18th and the seventh and last, with explosive bombs, followed at 9.a.m. The centre of the typhoon passed within a few miles to the south of the Royal Observatory at 10 a.m.

During the passage of the typhoon raging seas and blinding wind and rain prevailed in the harbour rendering all attempts at rescue practically futile. Host of the ships in the harbour had moved out and anchored in Kowloon Bay over night and in that area it would appear there was considerable congestion and boats bumped against each other and broke loose, The 3.8. "Loong Sang" and several other vessels drifted helplessly down the harbour.

in all four vessels were sunk in the harbour and several were driven ashore while twenty launches and some thirty junks met a similar fate at various places, All the ships with the exception of the 8.8, "Long Sang" which has been abandoned by the owners have been get off fairly easily and are being repaired. The number of deaths in the harbour and adjacent waters osmot be given with any degree

socuracy. Six Europeans were lost by the foundering of the 8.8. "Leong Sang” while from native craft fifteen

bodies have been recovered and a further fifty persons are

reported as missing.

The damage ashore was considerable. After the

typhoon the streets were littered with debris, sheets of

corrugated iren, signboards, bricks, mortar, trees, and branches and rubbish of every description. On shore the death roll totals approximately 43; these persons were killed by the collapse of houses and metshode, by the

falling of live electric wires, of trees and by landslides.

The principal damage done to the various public

buildings and works and the approximate cost of reinstate-

ment is as follows:-
